All in Good Time

DSC00727
It’s a good time of the year for beautiful weather.  The temperatures have been mild, the sun has been shining, and you know what that means…sunbeams to nap in!  Trust me, no sunbeam goes unnoticed at this house! If there is a sunbeam, then we’ve got a cat on the job – napping away!

This time of year also makes for interesting landscapes.  Here is a field that is covered in red clover that make us think of strawberries.

StrawberryFieldsForever

This picture does not do it justice at all. The red color is so vibrant, you can see it from miles down the road, a sea of red.

We hope whereever you are, you can enjoy some nice weather (and some naps in sunbeams, too, if that’s your thing)!

Be sure to check back with us next week!  There’s going to be a little surprise for our readers – here’s a tease:

Now, just be patient – you’ll know….all in good time!

I’m Beside Myself

KosmoReflection
Spring is an exciting time here at The House of 9 Lives! There is more activity outside as nature is waking up from her winter slumber. The wildlife is out and about, and therefore, there is more entertainment for us.  Just the other day “He” called us all to the window to see a Fox Squirrel in the front yard.  “She” wasn’t quick enough to grab the camera, so, we are borrowing this picture from autonomous1one1 on Flickr (we hope that was okay to do!).  Check out thier photostream – they have a lot of beautiful nature photos!

This Fox Squirrel looks just like the one we saw!  He didn’t stay around for long, he would jog a few steps, stop, stand up and look around, and soon he was out of sight.

More good entertainment came our way when these guys stopped by for a visit.  He recently filled our squirrel and bird feeders.  Because He had more food than the bird feeder would hold, He poured the left overs out on the patio.  Shortly after, She snapped a picture of these beautiful Indigo Buntings:

I don’t remember having seen anything so delicious beautiful when I was an outside kitty! I think they are blueberry flavored colored! I better watch what I say – that kind of thinking is what made me a house-cat to start with!  He and She never appreciated all the fine gifts I was bringing them!

Anyway, I’m really excited to see all the activity going on outside. You can see I’m just beside myself with happiness!

Adding Injury to Insult

Blossom
Recently “He” and “She” saw their family physician for their routine annual exams.  They are both in good health, and the visit went well except for one little thing.  She got in trouble with the good Doc about her weight!  In the past year, She has gained a few pounds, and Dr. M. made a point of mentioning it (several times).  Thank goodness the home gym is now complete.  She has promised him that by her next visit it will be evident that She has been working out regularly.

Other than the weight gain, She is in perfect health, but, because it has been more than ten years since She had a Tetanus shot, they went ahead and gave her one.  Now, two days later, she is miserable.  The injection site is swollen and feverish, and as she is a side-sleeper, a good night’s sleep is difficult due to the pain.  Ironically, studies have shown that insufficient sleep may play a part in weight gain!

I say commenting about her weight, and then giving her the Tetanus shot, only added injury to insult!

Sharing the Love

Alley's New Bedspread“He” and “She” bought a new bedspread for their bedroom. It’s a nice, fluffy comforter, with pillow shams, sheet set and dust ruffle, and it is very comfortable!  I should know – I was the first one on it!  And, I made myself quite comfortable for a while!

Speaking of things that are new, we have some new members of the family. Well, the extended family, anyway. We have two new cousins, and because it has been a long time since there were kittens here at The House of 9 Lives, She and He really had a blast playing with them.

This is Scooter. You can tell he’s in perpetual motion. She had a really hard time getting him to pose for pictures!

And, this is Boots.

Scooter and Boots were adopted from a local Veterinarian’s office, and moved right into the family’s brand new home. They are already quite spoiled.

It’s exciting to have new family members.  Especially the kind that live in another house! He and She can share some love with them, but I’m sure not sharing my new bedspread!

Strange Bedfellows

DSC00792I think the saying goes “politics makes strange bedfellows”, and while there are no politics involved here, this is definitely a case of strange bedfellows.  Nova seems to think that he is an equal-opportunity napper and takes every chance to curl up with whoever is available.  I usually take my naps with Barny or Jazz.  They are my favorites to snuggle up with.  But, recently it seems I wake up to find myself cuddled up with Nova.

Now that Nova has been living here for a while, I’ve gotten used to him, but back when he first came in the house, I couldn’t stand him! I would walk from room to room and cry and carry on, and if he dared to walk past me, I would scream like a banshee!

Nope, no politics here, but maybe the saying should be “housecats make strange bedfellows”!

Close Contact

BarnyIn a past post, I told you ”He” went to the eye doctor and had an evaluation for Lasik surgery.  During that visit, He was told that He is not a candidate for that particular vision improvement technique.  So, recently, He decided He would consider an alternative surgery known as a Clear Lens Implant in which the natural lens of the eye is removed and a synthetic lens is put in its place.  However, after an extensive (and expensive) evaluation for that procedure, it turns out that he is not an ideal candidate for that one, either.  The cost is somewhat prohibitive, and the results are not totally predictable.  There would be some chance He would still have a need for glasses.  So, after much consideration, He has decided against surgery of any kind.

However, He has decided to explore the last option available to him… Contact Lenses.  During his routine vision exam, his Ophthalmologist suggested He try Toric lenses, which are available in his prescription and do correct for astigmatism.  He has been resistant to the idea of contact lenses because of the extreme sensitivity of his eyes, but with the encouragement of the physician (and of “She”), He eventually relented.

The fitting of the lenses was quite an experience.  Of course, I wasn’t there to see it, but She said it took two technicians almost an hour to get one contact lens in his eye.  One of them said He had the strongest eyelid muscles she had ever seen!  Every time they would come at him, his eyes would just snap shut!  He was trying to cooperate and hold them open, but it was a reflexive movement!  Finally, they managed to get one lens in, and by that time, his eye was red and irritated.  However, He was encouraged at how well He could see.  The second lens, while it took several attempts, was much easier to put in place.  She said the best part was when He looked in the mirror for the first time.  He has worn glasses since He was seventeen months old, and had never actually seen himself without glasses. She thought it was a very profound moment!

The very best thing about the contacts is that He can wear sunglasses with them.  He has never owned a pair of sunglasses. The only kind He’s ever had are the ill-fitting type that clip or attach with magnets to eyeglasses.  Now, He can look cool in sporty shades.

He is still working on inserting the contacts, and hopefully with practice, He will become comfortable with the act.  He already thinks the benefits of wearing them outweigh the terror of putting them in.  So, if he can keep in close contact with that feeling, I just know he can overcome the challenge of inserting the lenses!
